SENSORYFarm-to-Bottle Witch Hazel
Certified organic Witch Hazel is grown exclusively on a family farm in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and extracted via cold maceration — never distilled — to preserve all beneficial tannins and antioxidants.
8-Hour Hydration Clinically Proven
Clinically tested to hydrate skin for up to 8 hours in a single application thanks to the triple-action blend of Glycerin, Aloe Vera Extract, and Lavender Flower Water.
pH-Balanced Formula
Formulated to respect skin's natural pH level (~5.5), helping restore balance after cleansing without over-stripping or causing tightness — especially important for sensitive and dry skin types.
Zero Alcohol, Zero Drying
Unlike traditional astringents that rely on drying alcohols, this toner uses non-distilled Witch Hazel water to tone and purify pores without the stripping, irritating side effects.
America's #1 Toner Brand
Thayers has been the #1 best-selling toner brand in America, with over 8 toners sold every minute (based on Nielsen unit sales data for the 52-week period ending January 2025).
Calming Lavender Flower Water
Lavandula Angustifolia Flower Water delivers anti-inflammatory and mild antibacterial properties to calm redness, reduce irritation, and leave skin feeling soothed and refreshed after every use.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEGenerally considered safe as it contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, or hydroquinone. However, Parfum (fragrance) is present, which some dermatologists recommend avoiding during pregnancy. Consult your OB-GYN before use.
NOT fully fungal-acne safe. Contains Polysorbate 20, an emulsifier that can feed Malassezia yeast. If you are prone to fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis), consider Thayers' Unscented version or an alternative toner.
Rated 1/5 on the comedogenic scale. No heavy oils or waxes in the formula. Safe for acne-prone skin. Witch Hazel actually helps minimize pore appearance and reduce excess sebum production.
Contains zero ethanol/SD alcohol. Safe for dry and sensitive skin types who are prone to barrier disruption from alcohol-based astringents. Witch Hazel is extracted with water only, never alcohol.
Clinically tested for safety by dermatologists. Suitable for daily use, morning and evening. Backed by over 175 years of herbal skincare tradition.
Contains Parfum (synthetic fragrance) in addition to natural Lavender Flower Water. Those with fragrance allergies or very reactive skin should patch test on the inner wrist for 24 hours before full application, or opt for the Unscented version.
Works well before serums containing Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and Hyaluronic Acid. Pairs especially well with gentle exfoliants. Avoid using directly before or after strong AHA/BHA acids in the same step.
100% vegan formula with no animal-derived ingredients. Certified cruelty-free — never tested on animals. Thayers is a PETA-certified cruelty-free brand.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSWater (Aqua) ~60-70%Base
The primary solvent and base of the formula. Purified water dissolves and disperses all other active and functional ingredients, providing the lightweight, watery texture characteristic of this toner.
- Function: Solvent, vehicle for delivery of actives
- Source: Purified, pharmaceutical-grade water
- Safety: Non-irritating, universally tolerated by all skin types
Glycerin ~5-8%Proven
One of skincare's most well-researched humectants. Glycerin draws moisture from the environment and from deeper skin layers into the stratum corneum, keeping skin supple and plump. It also forms a protective barrier on the skin surface to reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
- Function: Humectant, skin-conditioning agent
- Clinical data: Studies show glycerin significantly improves skin hydration and barrier function within hours of application
- Comedogenic rating: 0/5 — completely non-comedogenic
Hamamelis Virginiana Bark/Leaf/Twig Extract (Witch Hazel) ~15-25%Proven
The hero ingredient and Thayers' signature. Grown exclusively on an organic farm in Connecticut and extracted via cold-water maceration (never distilled), this proprietary Witch Hazel extract retains naturally-occurring tannins, polyphenols, and gallic acid with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Acts as a natural astringent to tighten pores, reduce excess oil, and calm irritated skin without stripping moisture.
- Key actives: Hamamelitannin, gallic acid, catechins — antioxidant polyphenols
- Function: Mild astringent, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial
- Extraction method: Cold-water maceration preserves tannin content vs. distillation which destroys them
- Farm: Certified organic, Fairfield County, Connecticut — farm-to-bottle traceability
Lavandula Angustifolia Flower Water (Lavender Flower Water) ~5-10%Proven
A true floral water (hydrosol) derived by steam-distilling lavender flowers. Contains micro-concentrations of lavender essential oil along with dissolved plant compounds. Known for anti-inflammatory, mild antiseptic, and calming properties — both on skin and through aromatherapy. Helps reduce redness and soothes reactive, stressed skin.
- Key actives: Linalool, linalyl acetate (trace), plant polysaccharides
- Function: Soothing agent, anti-inflammatory, mild antimicrobial, sensory enhancer
- Benefit: Calms acne-related redness and soothes post-sun or irritated skin
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract (Aloe Vera) ~3-6%Proven
Certified organic Aloe Vera extract co-macerated with Witch Hazel during extraction, making it an integral part of Thayers' proprietary base. Rich in polysaccharides, acemannan, vitamins C and E, and amino acids. Provides soothing, healing, and secondary humectant properties. Traditionally used to relieve sunburn, inflammation, and skin irritation.
- Key actives: Acemannan polysaccharide, anthraquinones, salicylic acid (trace), vitamins C & E
- Function: Humectant, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, soothing agent
- Certification: Certified Organic (*)
Potassium Hydroxide <1%Functional
A pH-adjusting alkali used in tiny amounts to bring the toner's pH to skin-compatible levels (~5.5). Reacts with citric acid to form a buffering system that maintains stable pH throughout the product's shelf life.
- Function: pH adjuster / neutralizer
- Safety: At trace concentrations used in cosmetics, considered safe by dermatologists and regulatory bodies (EWG score: 1)
Caprylyl Glycol <1%Functional
A multifunctional ingredient derived from caprylic acid (a fatty acid). Serves dual roles as a skin-conditioning humectant and as a preservative booster that enhances the efficacy of Phenoxyethanol, enabling lower overall preservative concentrations in the formula.
- Function: Skin-conditioning agent, preservative booster, humectant
- Safety: EWG score: 1 — low hazard, well-tolerated
Citric Acid <1%Functional
A naturally derived alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) used here primarily as a pH buffer and stabilizer alongside Potassium Hydroxide — not at exfoliating concentrations. Helps chelate metals in water to improve formula stability and preserve ingredient integrity.
- Function: pH adjuster, chelating agent, antioxidant
- Note: At trace concentrations in this formula, does not provide meaningful exfoliation
Ethylhexylglycerin <1%Functional
A synthetic glycerin derivative that acts as a skin-conditioning agent and preservative booster. Works synergistically with Phenoxyethanol to provide broad-spectrum preservation at lower individual concentrations, reducing potential irritation from higher preservative loads.
- Function: Skin conditioning, preservative booster, antimicrobial
- Safety: EWG score: 1 — generally well-tolerated
Polysorbate 20 <1%Functional
A mild emulsifier and solubilizer that helps blend the lavender fragrance and flower water components uniformly into the water-based formula. Derived from sorbitol and lauric acid. Generally well-tolerated, but noted as a potential concern for fungal-acne-prone individuals as it can support Malassezia yeast growth.
- Function: Emulsifier, solubilizer, surfactant
- Comedogenic rating: 0/5
Potassium Sorbate <0.5%Functional
A food-grade preservative salt (potassium salt of sorbic acid) widely used in cosmetics and food. Effective against molds, yeasts, and some bacteria. Considered one of the gentlest and safest preservatives available in the industry.
- Function: Preservative (antifungal, antibacterial)
- Safety: EWG score: 1 — low hazard, approved globally
Sodium Benzoate <0.5%Functional
A widely used preservative (sodium salt of benzoic acid) effective against bacteria, yeast, and mold. Works best at the lower pH range of this formula (pH 5–5.5), making it an appropriate choice here. Used in combination with Potassium Sorbate for broad-spectrum protection.
- Function: Preservative
- Note: At pH levels above 5.5, efficacy decreases — appropriate use in this pH-balanced toner
Phenoxyethanol <1%Functional
A broad-spectrum preservative that prevents microbial contamination from bacteria, yeast, and mold. One of the most widely used and studied preservatives in modern cosmetics. Approved by the EU, FDA, and global regulatory bodies at concentrations up to 1%.
- Function: Primary preservative
- Safety: EWG score: 3 — moderate (mainly due to data uncertainty, not demonstrated harm); regulatory agencies consider it safe up to 1%
- Note: Some advocacy groups express caution; however, dermatological consensus supports safety at these concentrations
Parfum (Fragrance) <0.5%Sensory
A proprietary fragrance blend used alongside the natural Lavender Flower Water to enhance the toner's calming lavender scent. Fragrance is listed as a single ingredient under INCI rules, meaning the specific aromatic compounds are not individually disclosed. This ingredient gives the toner its signature spa-like, soothing aroma.
- Function: Sensory/scent enhancement
- Caution: Can cause reactions in fragrance-sensitive or allergic individuals

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply immediately after cleansing on damp or dry skin. This toner preps and balances skin pH, helping subsequent serums and moisturizers absorb more effectively. Safe to use both AM and PM. Can also be used as a midday refresh mist throughout the day.
How to use
HOW TO USECleanse Your Face
Begin with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser to remove makeup, sunscreen, and daily impurities. Pat your face lightly dry or leave slightly damp — both work well with this toner.
Apply the Toner
Saturate a cotton pad with a few drops of toner, then sweep gently across your face, neck, and décolleté in upward strokes. Alternatively, pour a small amount into clean palms and press directly into skin for less product waste.
Allow to Absorb
Let the toner absorb fully into the skin — this takes just 20–30 seconds thanks to the ultra-lightweight, watery formula. Do not rinse off.
Continue Your Routine
Follow immediately with your serum, essence, eye cream, and moisturizer. In the morning, always finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen. The toner's glycerin base helps subsequent products absorb faster and more evenly.
Use Morning & Night
Safe for twice-daily use. Can also be used throughout the day as a refreshing face mist — pour into a small spray bottle for convenient on-the-go application. Great for soothing after sun exposure, waxing, or shaving.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESWitch Hazel's natural tannins act as a gentle astringent to minimize pore appearance, reduce excess sebum, and leave skin with a balanced, shine-free finish without over-stripping.
Glycerin and Aloe Vera provide meaningful hydration, but very dry skin types may need to follow up with a rich moisturizer or facial oil to lock in that moisture layer effectively.
One of the best skin types for this toner. Balances oily T-zone while keeping drier cheek areas hydrated. Lightweight enough to use as a refreshing midday spritz on oilier zones.
Alcohol-free, non-stripping formula works well for many sensitive skin users. However, Parfum (fragrance) is present — very reactive skin may prefer the Unscented variant. Always patch test first.
Witch Hazel's antimicrobial properties help control acne-causing bacteria and calm existing breakouts. Non-comedogenic (1/5). Note: Not fungal-acne safe due to Polysorbate 20 in the formula.
The antioxidant tannins in Witch Hazel help neutralize free radicals that accelerate skin aging. Good as a hydrating prep layer; mature skin will benefit from following with a peptide or retinol serum.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESNearly identical formula concept — 100% natural distilled Witch Hazel with rosewater, alcohol-free, and fragrance-free. 16 fl oz gives you significantly more product for less money. The main difference is Dickinson's uses distilled Witch Hazel (fewer tannins) and has a lighter scent.
Another witch hazel-based alcohol-free toner at an even lower price point. Less sophisticated formula without the Aloe and Lavender Water combination. Great for oily skin on a very tight budget, but lacks the multi-ingredient synergy of Thayers.
A beloved face mist with Aloe, botanical extracts, and rosewater offering similar refreshing and soothing effects. Does not contain Witch Hazel — a key functional difference. Better for use as a midday spritz or setting mist; less effective as a dedicated toning step.

Frequently asked questions
FAQThayers Lavender Facial Toner does not contain retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical sunscreens — the main ingredients typically restricted during pregnancy. In that sense, it is generally considered low-risk. However, it does contain Parfum (synthetic fragrance) and Lavender Flower Water. Some dermatologists and OB-GYNs recommend minimizing fragrance exposure during pregnancy as a precaution, since fragrance components may be absorbed through the skin. The Witch Hazel extract, Aloe Vera, and Glycerin are generally considered safe during pregnancy. As with any skincare product, we recommend consulting your OB-GYN or midwife before use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, especially if you have sensitive or reactive skin.
No — Thayers Lavender Facial Toner is NOT considered fully fungal-acne safe. It contains Polysorbate 20, a commonly used emulsifier/solubilizer that can feed Malassezia yeast, which is responsible for fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis). If you have a confirmed or suspected case of fungal acne, we recommend choosing a Polysorbate-free alternative. Thayers' own Unscented Facial Toner may have a more fungal-acne-friendly formulation — always check the current ingredient list before purchasing. For confirmed fungal acne, ingredients to look for in a toner include Zinc Pyrithione, Azelaic Acid, or simple Witch Hazel without the problematic emulsifiers.
Yes, Thayers Lavender Toner is compatible with most common skincare actives when used correctly. As a prep step after cleansing, it pairs well with Vitamin C serums, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, and mild actives applied afterwards. With AHA and BHA: apply the toner first, allow it to fully absorb, then apply your AHA/BHA exfoliant after (rather than immediately layering on top — give skin 10–15 minutes between steps). With Retinol: use the toner as your prep step, then allow skin to completely dry before applying your retinol product. The trace citric acid in the toner is at pH-buffering concentrations, not active exfoliating levels, so it won't interfere with your retinol's efficacy. Always listen to your skin — if any combination causes redness, stinging, or irritation, simplify your routine.
Thayers Lavender Toner is versatile enough to work for most skin types, but it excels most for oily and combination skin. The Witch Hazel's natural astringent properties help control excess sebum, minimize pore appearance, and create a balanced, non-greasy finish. It also works well for normal and acne-prone skin thanks to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties. For sensitive skin, it is a good option but fragrance-sensitive individuals may experience mild reactions — if that's you, consider the Thayers Unscented Toner. For very dry skin, it provides light hydration but you will need to follow up with a richer moisturizer. It is one of the most widely cross-skin-type-compatible drugstore toners on the market.
Results vary depending on your skin type and concerns, but most users notice a difference quickly. Immediate: After the very first use, skin feels cleaner, refreshed, and more balanced — the cotton pad will often pick up additional impurities missed by cleansing. Within 1–2 weeks: With consistent twice-daily use, oily skin types typically notice improved oil control and less mid-day shine. Pores may begin to look tighter. Within 3–4 weeks: More visible improvement in skin tone evenness, pore size, and redness reduction, especially for acne-prone or combination skin. After 6–8 weeks: Long-term users report sustained hydration, a clearer and more luminous complexion, and an overall healthier skin appearance. Note: Thayers is a toning and hydration product, not an active treatment — for concerns like hyperpigmentation, deep wrinkles, or severe acne, pair it with targeted treatment serums.
Thayers Lavender Toner is applied as the second step of your routine, immediately after cleansing and before any serums, essences, or moisturizers. The correct order is: 1) Cleanser → 2) Thayers Toner → 3) Serum/Essence → 4) Eye Cream → 5) Moisturizer → 6) Sunscreen (AM only). Apply with a cotton pad swept across the face, or press directly into skin with clean palms — both methods work well. It can also be used throughout the day as a midday refresher by transferring some product into a small spray bottle. Always apply it to a clean face; never use it to replace cleansing, as it is designed to prep and balance, not to remove heavy makeup or sunscreen.
No — Thayers Lavender Facial Toner is non-comedogenic, rated 1/5 on the comedogenic scale. It contains no heavy oils, waxes, or known pore-clogging ingredients. In fact, the formula works in the opposite direction: Witch Hazel's natural tannins act as a mild astringent to help minimize the appearance of pores, reduce excess sebum, and keep the skin surface clean. Glycerin and Aloe Vera are both rated 0/5 on the comedogenic scale. The only potential concern for acne-prone skin is Polysorbate 20 — which is not comedogenic in the traditional sense (won't clog pores) but can support Malassezia yeast growth, which is a distinct concern from comedogenic acne. For standard, hormonal, or bacterial acne, this toner is completely safe and non-pore-clogging.
Once opened, Thayers Lavender Facial Toner should be used within 12 months for optimal efficacy and safety. Look for the open-jar PAO symbol on the bottle, which confirms a 12M period after opening. The 12 oz (355 ml) bottle is generously sized — used twice daily, it typically lasts 3–6 months depending on how liberally you apply it. Store it with the cap tightly closed in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Some users store it in the refrigerator, which is perfectly safe and creates an extra refreshing application experience. If you notice any change in color (beyond the normal pale yellow range), significant change in scent, or unusual texture, discontinue use.
Verdict: Thayers Lavender Facial Toner is a time-tested classic that earns its place as America's #1 toner brand for good reason. The proprietary cold-macerated, certified organic Witch Hazel formula is genuinely superior to most alcohol-based toners on the market, delivering real antioxidant and astringent benefits without the stripping effects. At roughly $12 for 12 oz, the value is unmatched. It shines brightest for oily, combination, and normal skin types seeking a gentle, effective daily toning step. The main limitations are the presence of Parfum (not ideal for very fragrance-sensitive skin), Polysorbate 20 (rules it out for fungal acne), and the lack of targeted actives like Niacinamide or AHA. For those it suits, it becomes a routine staple — reliable, affordable, and gentle enough for lifelong daily use. Pair it with a targeted serum for more specific skin concerns, and it becomes part of a truly well-rounded skincare routine.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
